Human movement is an essential element in animation. In my first academic year of my bachelor study, we got the first major animation assignment, where we had to recreate a 10 second scene from a Buster Keaton film. As his films are all silent films, the story is fully told with movement. In addition, these films have iconic gags
I chose to use a scene from the film One Week from 1920, where a muscled delivery man hands over a piano to Buster. This little scene has enough action to apply my animation skills to. It is important to apply the animation skills and apply them correctly. Carrying the piano and having the piano fall are perfect examples of weight. Buster is a skinny character. Overlap and follow through is added to his movements to give a more organic feel. The buff character has a more stiff appearance. However, overlap is still apply to the arms and hands.
This animation is fully made in Autodesk Maya. In addition, I have made screenshots of all the main poses of the characters in the reference, using Adobe Premiere Pro. Getting the poses right is an important step. After this, the animation and it’s principles were applied.
